5 Money-Saving Tips You Must Know Before Buying a New Laptop

Having your laptop die can be a painful experience — and it’s made doubly so by the fact that buying a new one to replace it can be a bank-breaker. But you don’t have to go into debt to get one that will suit your needs!

Keep these five tips in mind next time you’re shopping for a laptop and you could save hundreds of dollars.

1. Don’t Pay for Features You Don’t Need

Laptops come absolutely packed with features today. Backlit keyboards, extra SD card slots, high-end graphics cards, and tons of solid-state storage space are all really nice to have, but before you drop a couple thousand dollars on a top-of-the-line notebook, take a moment to think about whether or not you’ll actually need those things.
Photo and video editing will benefit from a more powerful graphics card. Complicated programs and calculations will need more RAM and CPU power. If you’re going to be traveling a lot, a larger battery will come in handy. If you have a lot of music, you’re going to need a big hard drive or solid-state drive. However, if you can skip out on any of these things, you’ll save money. You almost certainly don’t need all of them.
If you’re just going to be doing the basics, all you really need is a Chromebook. They don’t come packed with features, but they’re very affordable, and can handle almost any task you need to do on a daily basis (unless you need to run specialized software for things like audiovisual work, stats, or high-powered computations). The Acer CB3-111-C670 Chromebook packs a 2.1 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, an 11.6-inch screen, and a 8-hour battery life. That will be plenty for most people, and it costs a minuscule $150.

2. Buy Refurbished

Refurbished laptops often cost hundreds of dollars less than their brand-new counterparts, leading some people to wonder if they’re making a big sacrifice in quality or longevity. But with any certified refurbished computer, you can be confident that you’re receiving a machine that’s very close to as good as new. Manufacturers have rigorous testing processes that ensure that each certified laptop will perform as it should, and refurbished models usually come with a warranty to further set your mind at ease.
Many people find that buying a Mac is a lot more financially feasible once they discover that you can get refurbished models from the Apple website. Macs almost never go on sale (and when they do, it’s only $100 off or so), so getting a refurbished model can save you some cash if you’re an Apple fan.
How much? You can usually save between 10% and 20% on a new Mac. This won’t be enough to take a vacation on, but saving money is saving money.
If you’re looking for a Windows PC and you’re willing to start with an older version of Windows, you can find a lot of laptops for $200 or $300. The best way to find what you’re looking for is to just search for “refurbished [the computer you want]” on Google and do some exploring.

3. Discounts, Sales, and Buy at the Right Time

If you’re looking at spending more than a couple hundred dollars on a new laptop, even a price cut of 10% could amount to a fair chunk of money. If you think you might be in the market for a new laptop soon, start keeping an eye out for sales at places like Best Buy and Office Depot, where you’ll occasionally see sales that could save you $100 or more.
Buying at the right time of year could save you quite a bit of money as well — April, August, September, and November often see low prices that coincide with the release of new models, back-to-school season, and the holidays. If a manufacturer has announced a new model, prices on the last generation of that particular laptop could drop significantly in price around these times. Students can sometimes get even better deals between July and September.
Using a deal-tracking website like DealNews or TechBargains will help you find laptops that are on sale, too. A quick look at DealNews today shows a refurbishedHP 14″ laptop with a 2.8GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM for $240. There’s also a Samsung Chromebook for $138. It’s going to be tough to beat those prices.

4. Don’t Buy Direct from a Manufacturer — Shop Around

It might seem like a good idea to buy directly from Microsoft, or Lenovo, or Apple, when you’re getting a new laptop, but in almost every case, you’ll pay more than you would at an authorized reseller. Even big-box stores like Best Buy often beat manufacturer prices. Costco and Wal-Mart also regularly undercut manufacturers by quite a bit. You could even get a great deal from Amazon.
And there are plenty of websites out there that sell laptops at nearly unbeatable prices, including auction websites where you can get lucky and save hundreds of dollars.

9 reasons why you need a car GPS system

You need Best Buy Coupons 20% OFF Entire Purchase Enter this Best Buy 20% OFF Coupon Code  during checkout to get 20% 50%  Promo Code Off  for activity trackers & pedometers. Check Best Buy 20% OFF Promo Code now!
In this article you will learn about X reasons why you need a car GPS System.
In-car GPS systems have come a long way since becoming available in 1980. Nowadays GPS Systems are extremely accurate, work in any weather conditions and often have a number of features that go above and beyond simply telling you a location or giving you directions.
If you have thought that you don’t really need a GPS in your car because you don’t need directions, usually know where you are going and maybe even have paper maps in your glove compartment just in case, this article will tell you about what modern GPS systems can do for you other than telling you how to get from point A to point B.

X reasons why you need a GPS system in your car:

You won’t get stuck in traffic ever again

A lot of modern GPS systems have features that notify you about traffic updates and help you avoid a route. You may know the area where you drive extremely well. You simply can’t know when a traffic jam is going to occur. This is why a GPS that will notify you about a traffic jam and plan a route that will help you avoid getting stuck is a must have.

You can go on an adventure

Next feature a lot of GPS units have today is the ability to add your own points of interest (POI). There are a number of paid and free services on the internet that provide custom POI, from generic tour guides to highly-specialized guides like Archaeology UK

Never get a traffic ticket

In addition to custom point of interest services dedicated to adventures, there are also services available for your GPS that notify you about red-light cameras, clearance hazards and road accident zones.
A lot of GPS systems have a feature called speed limit indicator that will tell you when you are going above the legal speed limit. Oftentimes speed limits on the roads depend on a municipality or a county and may change on the same road without any logical reason. Utilizing all the features described in this paragraph can significantly help you avoid costly mistakes on the road and points on your driver’s license.

Increased safety while on the road

A feature called Lane Assist will guide you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar towns and exits on the highway easy to navigate. You won’t have to guess when to change a lane and will be able to avoid dangerous situations that usually occur at strangely located intersections and turns. A lot of GPS systems have built-in dashcams. A dashcam will provide you with a guaranteed proof about everything that happens on the road in case or an accident or a dangerous situation.

Have your GPS serve as a monitor for a backup camera

A lot of GPS systems have a feature that lets you use the unit as monitor for a backup camera. Basically, if you have an older car and want a set of modern features, all you need is a current GPS unit that will cost you a tiny fraction of the price of a new car.

You can use your GPS as a hands-free speaker replacement

Most GPS systems on the market are Bluetooth enabled and compatible with most smartphones and regular cell-phones for hands-free calling. Having such a GPS system in your car means that you don’t need a speaker for your phone and can use your phone safely while driving.

Keep track of your trips

You might know where you are going and not need any directions. You might still be interested to know the stats about your driving, your average speed, trip logs and so on. A GPS will not only gather this information, but also pair up with apps on your smartphone to give you any stats about your driving that you might be interested in.

Share information about your rides with your family for increased safety

When paired with your smartphone, a GPS can use your phone’s existing data plan to share information about your parking location and your destination with your loved ones, so that they always know where you are.

Play audio and video on your GPS

A lot of GPS system support playback for multiple audio and video formats. You can use your GPS as an audio or a video player on the go in your car.
As you can see, there’s a lot more to modern GPS systems than just telling you how to get from point A to point B. If you thought that directions where the only thing a GPS was capable of, it’s probably time to reconsider your opinion and take a look at what GPS systems currently available can do to make your life easier, safer and more convenient!

The Good
In a class of its own in terms of performance, capacity, and extra features. Inverter Technology cooks food faster and more efficiently; Keep Warm features provide added convenience.
The ultimate space saver; ideal for homes without much countertop or kitchen space like college dorm rooms.
Includes handy settings like Auto Cook, Auto Reheat and Effortless Defrost, as well as an Easy-Set button that allows you to add anywhere from 1-6 minutes to your cooking time.
Delivers incredible power and performance that is in line with its much more expensive counterparts. Stands out from its rivals in terms of its quietness and ease of use.
The Bad
On the more expensive side, but its high quality and durability may end up saving you money in the long run.
Does not pack much of a punch at 750 watts.
Lacks a truly standout feature, but it has all the basics that most microwave owners expect.
Not as many bells and whistles as the Panasonic.
The Bottom Line
The absolute best microwave on the market. No other microwave delivers the same level of performance, capacity or extra features.
A good buy if you don't have much room, but if you do, we recommend the Kenmore instead.
Though it is a good option for price-conscious buyers, the Kenmore offers very similar performance and features for less.
The best value for your money. For the price, you won’t find a more dependable microwave on the market.
Big-box stores and online retailers are over-flooded with microwaves designed for a variety of different purposes, so we focused on narrowing down the four best microwave ovens for the countertop.

Performance
One of the most important things to look for when deciding which microwave to buy is how much power it uses, with most falling between 600 and 1200 watts. Microwaves with a higher wattage will cook and reheat food faster, though that does not mean that a low-wattage unit will be any less efficient; it simply takes longer. With that said, some microwaves do feature improved cooking technology that will yield better results, and depending on what you plan on using it for, this can often be worth the extra cost.
Features
While it is guaranteed that every microwave on this list will cook food, some units come with extra bells and whistles that are either designed for a better cooking experience or sheer convenience. These features include things like preset power levels, more intuitive controls and the ability to defrost frozen meat without the typical browning effect.
Features
A microwave’s size will not only determine what you can place inside of the oven, but whether it will even fit in your kitchen. While some larger microwaves are big enough to accommodate large casserole dishes, people who live in small apartments or college dorms do not have the room to put it anywhere. Conversely, smaller microwaves may fit much easier on most countertops, but they limit the size of the plate or container that can be reheated.
Price
Most countertop models designed for home use fall into a very similar price range (around $70 to $150), but there are more expensive commercial units that cost as much as $500. Generally, the larger and more powerful the microwave, the higher the price tag, but you can also get a lot more for a few more dollars if you shop smartly.

Show the old man how to be a kid again by giving him a new toy

What do you get a father who has a kid as great as you? If your answer is “another tie,” then you’re not as great as you think you are. Instead, you should give your father something he’s never even thought about before, because the man works hard, and can probably buy anything he wants, anyhow. What he really wants is to be appreciated for putting up with your hijinks for all these years.
The best way to do that is to recognize him as more than just the guy who changed your diapers, coached your soccer team and taught you to drive, and instead as someone with interests all his own. For a little inspiration, here are seven dad stereotypes with a gift idea to match. Some of them are expensive, but hey, it’s not my job to tell you how much you should love your old man.
The Drinker: Every old fella loves a cold beverage on a hot day — whether it’s a macro beer, micro brew, or just a can of soda. No mere koozie, Arctican is a $19 drink-cooling extraordinaire that keeps beverages three times colder using a double layer of vacuum-insulated steel and an ice-cooled base. It’s some pretty chill technology for a 21st century pop to be hauling around, whether it’s by the barbecue or on the riding mower.
CorkcicleArtican
The Duffer: Mark Twain reportedly said “Golf is a good walk spoiled,” but your dad is only a humorist when he claims to have finished a round under par. Arccos Golf might just make an honest man out of him. A GPS-enabled iOS app, Apple Watch app, and collection of club grip sensors, this $399 learning tool will improve his game or… or… or his game stinks. No pressing of buttons or tapping on screens, you just play your round and the app collects data like stroke count, shot distance, and and club average.
ArccosArccos Golf Apps
The Lawn Mower Man: For all the money you’d spend on a Robomowrobotic lawnmower, you could probably get your dad a very good landscaping service for your dad. But no man worth his grass stains derives joy from seeing another guy tending to his lawn when he can have a machine do it instead. Starting at $1,199, Robomow’s RC line connects to dad’s smartphone via Bluetooth, has steel blades, an edging mode that actually reaches beyond the wheels, can conquer 20-degree slopes, and has a rain sensor so it knows the most crucial part of lawn care: when not to mow. Speaking of that, it can also be locked via PIN-code. So no, you can’t take his new wheels for a spin.
RobowMowRoboMow
The Retro Gamer: We’ve heard it all before. “When I was a your age, I had a paper route, and I had to dodge dogs, bees, jack-hammering road workers, Model T cars, hearses, and the grim reaper to make some spending money.” Give him the gift of video game nostalgia with NES30, an authentic-feeling game controller that can connect to everything from mobile devices to game consoles via Bluetooth and USB. Programmable to work with touchscreen games, the controller can be paired with a second NES30 to play multi-player games on iOS, and it can even step in for Wiimotes on Nintendo’s gaming system. With four buttons on the top and two shoulder triggers, the $45 accessory is not a perfect imitation of the original Nintendo Entertainment System gamepad — it’s actually better than before.
nes-s30-controller
feiji—8bitdoNES30
The Music Man: At some point in your life — probably around the time you start changing the words to your favorite songs so as not to scandalize your own child — you realize that your dad’s taste in music isn’t all that bad. When you reach that stage, get dad a JBL Charge 2+. This rugged, rubbery, $149 Bluetooth speaker is splash-proof, making it great for all sorts of uses, from washing the car to working in the yard to fixing a leak under the sink. With excellent bass and a 12-hour battery, it rocks hard and long. Just be sure to wipe it down when you’re done with all those chores. There’s no reason to make a mess of his things when you borrow them.
JBLCharge 2+
The Lazy Boy: If you want to do something special for dad this year, take his lineup of old, tired remote controls and lay them to rest in the back of his entertainment center. Swapping these broken-buttoned clickers with a universal remote like the Logitech Harmony Smart Control is not only more humane, it’s also better for your home in the long run. That’s because Logitech just announced a free software upgrade that makes all its hub-based remotes compatible with its home control software. Translation: This $129 universal television remote just gained the ability to connect your smartphone to more than 270,000 home and entertainment devices, like the Nest Learning Thermostat and Philips Hue LED bulbs. (And as a bonus, now you have a whole other category of gifts to buy on future Father’s Days.)
 Harmony
LogitechLogitech Harmony
The Numbers Guy: One thing every Dad can go for is a little more organization. If your old man is strapped with the newest tech from Apple, that means he’s aching for a quality Apple Watch dock. The only problem with that is there aren’t many out there, yet. Moxiware Apple Watch Dock Duo outdoes most others on the market because it provides a home for both the Apple Watch and an iPhone. (Question for product developers: Every Apple Watch requires an iPhone, so why are you bothering with making standalone watch docks?) Fitting Lightning-connector iPhones with and without cases, the stand can adjust to make sure any backing thickness can be accommodated. And if your Father’s Apple Watch is on back order, fear not: Moxiware’s dock can hold a regular watch in the meantime, and will ship in time for Father’s Day.

5 Tips to Interest Your Child in Playing an Instrument

Mastering an instrument takes time, dedication, discipline and concentration, so it's no wonder getting children interested in playing - and practicing - is no easy task. Not only is learning to play an instrument a rewarding experience, but research from Martin Gardiner at Brown University's Center for the Study of Human Development shows that children who are involved in music perform better on standardize tests and have overall higher IQ scores than their nonmusical counterparts. This is because learning music stimulates brain function used to understand math, science and engineering.
So how do you get your children excited about playing an instrument? Here are five tips:

1. Pick properly.

Choosing the right instrument is perhaps the most important way of getting children interested in playing music. If possible, have your children test out a few instruments before choosing a final one. While they may think a certain instrument looks cool, a difficult instrument might intimidate them at first, so try something more basic when first starting out.

2. Get involved.

Be actively engaged in your children's music lessons. Ask to hear what pieces they are working on, if they learned any new skills recently or if they know facts about the composer they are playing. Make sure they are staying committed to their practice time and reassure them that their hard work will pay off.

3. Enroll an expert.

Choose a teacher that encourages and inspires your musician-in-training. Receiving proper instruction from a good music teacher will get kids more interested in playing and practicing.

4. Select the right songs.

Choose music that your children will enjoy playing. Yes, the classics are vital, but let's face it, your children would rather play the latest chart-topping pop songs. The more they relate to a piece of music the more likely they will be driven to perfect playing that piece. JoyTunes' two piano apps, Piano Dust Buster and Piano Mania, feature a wide variety of songs ranging from Beethoven to One Direction and everything in between.

5. Be their biggest fan.

Set aside special times for your children's performances - even if it's just for one song in the living room. Create a system of rewards to encourage them. Anything to encourage more practicing will help them improve their skills, which in turn will make them more excited to continue to learn.

Flatscreen or curved? HD or 4K? Use this expert guide to cut through the sales jargon and find the best TV for you.
TV

Buying a new TV There are hundreds of televisions available to buy - from cheap TVs for a bedroom or study, to large-screen sets that give you a cinema-like experience at home. While it's great to have such choice available, knowing what you want helps make the decision much simpler. This guide will help you choose the right size and brand of TV for your budget. You can also use the tool below to see the screen type, features and connections you'll need. When you're ready, browse our independent and expert TV reviews to find the set that ticks all your boxes.

What size TV should I buy? With the TV market continually shifting towards larger screens, it's now hard to get a top quality set smaller than 40-inches in size. However, bear in mind that with TV bezels (the frame around the screen) shrinking, larger sets might not be as big as you think. You can use our interactive online tool to find out what size of TV you should buy. We also publish size dimensions (depth, height and width) for all TVs that we test, so make sure you check out the Specifications tab in each review to see if the TV you're looking at will actually fit in your living room. If space is tight, a huge TV simply might not fit where you want to place it.
Insignia™ - 50" Class (49.5" Diag.) - LED - 4K Ultra HD TV - Smart - Roku TV - Black - Larger Front

How much will I need to spend? TV prices can start at under £100, but go into the many thousands for huge screen models. It's best to decide on your budget before you hit the shops or go online, but with TVs now offering better value than ever, you may get more for your money than you expect. According to a recent survey, two thirds of Which? members told us they spent between £200 and £600 on their TV. Between £600 and £1,000 was the preferred budget for 21% of respondents, while just 9% splashed out over £1,000 on their new television.

The good news is that you can now get a great TV regardless of your budget. Top notch 40 to 43-inch TVs are available from £350, while TVs of 50 or 55-inches start from around £800. Make sure you use the 'Where to buy' section of our reviews to get the best possible price for the model you're interested in. How do I choose the best TV brand?  There are loads of TV brands all vying for your attention and money. However, the majority of people will buy a TV from one the 'big four' TV makers – Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic.  Samsung is the market leader in TVs, followed closely by South Korean rival LG, and both have huge ranges going from cheap TVs to super-premium, big screen sets costing thousands of pounds. Sony and Panasonic have comparatively smaller ranges, but still have plenty to offer in terms of quality.

Aside these four TV giants, there are various fringe brands, such as Toshiba, Sharp and Philips, who have all seen their fortunes rather fade in recent years. Finally, a big chunk of the market is taken up by cheap TVs from the supermarkets and own brands, such as Logik (Currys) and Technika (Tesco). These TVs generally have low price tags, but usually lack quality when we test them.  Should I go for HD or 4K? High definition TVs have been around for a while now and they come in two flavours. HD-Ready TVs are cheaper than ones marked Full HD, or HD Ready 1080p. Both can handle broadcast HD television, but it's best to go for a Full HD set if you can as that means you'll also get the best out of Blu-ray films. A new breed of TV is now available to buy with 4K, or Ultra HD (UHD), resolution. 4K TVs have four times the pixels of Full HD models, and so can display even more detailed and vibrant pictures. There's not much 4K content to watch, but a good 4K TV should enhance your regular viewing, too. Consider going 4K if you're upgrading, with good 4K TVs now available for under £500. For more on this, head to our What is 4K TV? guide. Are curved screen TVs worth the money? In the last few years, televisions with concave curved screens have started to emerge - firstly on high-end premium TVs but gradually filtering down to more affordable models.

Manufacturers claim that curved TVs can enhance your viewing experience by 'wrapping' the picture around you, a bit like watching a film at the IMAX cinema. However, our expert and independent testing has indicated that the curved effect is minimal at best, and is only really visible if you sit dead straight on while watching the screen (something most people rarely do). Curved TVs still can perform well in our lab overall, but think carefully before buying if one is right for you. Bear in mind, too, that if you want to wall mount your TV, a curved model won't sit as flush as a flatscreen will. Plus, a curved screen can look a bit odd, or even warped, when viewed on an angle. When's the best time to buy a new TV? When you're ready to upgrade an older set, bear in mind that there are some seasonal trends that could help you bag a bargain. We know from tracking prices that June is a great time to buy a new TV as prices tend to be discounted across a wide range of technology products. You'll also see heavy discounting on TVs around the key sales periods, such as Black
Friday/Cyber Monday in late November and the Boxing Day sales in December. Be aware, however, that the sales can involve price cuts on poor quality TVs as retailers try to shift unwanted stock.

Make sure you check our reviews first before parting with your cash, so you don't up with a bad product. Finally, if you're not too fussed about the latest features, our research has shown that the previous year's TVs can have hundreds of pounds knocked off their price tags in the April to May period. This is to make room for the newer models - so shop smart and you can potentially pick up a still fantastic TV at an even better price.

Keurig - Donut Shop K-Cups (48-Pack) - Multi - Larger Front

Coffee makers came a long way. From yesterday’s cowboy pots boiling coffee over the coals to today’s slick gourmet brewers, there is a coffee maker to meet every lifestyle, every taste, every budget and every counter space. So where do you start discovering the coffee maker of your dreams?
Do a little homework before you head for the appliance aisle at your favorite shop. Consider what type of coffee you prefer, how frequently you drink coffee, how much space you have for a coffee maker, how much you are able to afford to spend on a coffee maker. These are the issues associated with determining whether to purchase an espresso or a non-espresso coffee maker.
Picking a Coffee Maker: Espresso or No Espresso
Picture
Espresso coffee makers are elaborate. They cost more than other coffee makers (some price thousands of dollars) and make a number of java types including cappuccino and lattes. Espresso machines regularly make just one cup of coffee and require cleaning after each cup. The java is stronger than that brewed by other means.
True java aficionados often choose to use particularly the superb automated versions that do everything from grinding the coffee to pouring it, the espresso coffee maker.
Typical coffee drinkers who prefer to have a pot of coffee available at all times and aren’t interested in lattes or other versions of coffee tend to prefer non-espresso coffee makers. Non-espresso coffee makers operate well for individuals who like to start the coffee brewing and carry on about their customary tasks while it brews. They do not trouble with beans or grinding and buy coffee already ground.
For coffee drinkers needing large amounts of coffee, non-espresso is the way to go. Large percolator sort coffee urns can be used to make significantly more than a hundred cups of coffee.
In addition they prefer returning to the coffee pot time after time over making just a cup at a time and refilling their coffee cup. Non-espresso sort coffee makers are much less expensive than espresso machines.
Choosing a Coffee Maker: Non-Espresso
These coffee makers are available in drip, French press and blend models. Drip machines normally make 6 to 10 cups of coffee. For individuals who need a lesser amount, it is better to purchase a model that makes 4 cups (or less) at a time. Drip coffee machines are easy and inexpensive to use.
There are pod coffee makers available which use single portion pods to brew coffee. Pod coffee makers can be affordable but the java itself costs a lot more than conventional cans of pre-ground coffee.
French Press coffee makers are amazing for a few cups of coffee at a time. Mix coffee makes featuring espresso and non -espresso coffee makers in one machine will also be available. Java drinkers are given the best of both worlds by these machines.
Selecting a Coffee Maker: Espresso
Espresso coffee makers come in semi-automatic, fully automatic and automatic models that are superb. These machines make fewer cups at a time and may need more hours and attention that the typical drip coffee machine.
The more automated an espresso coffee maker is, the more features it’ll offer. Some take care of everything from grinding the coffee beans to filling the cup with coffee and ejecting the used coffee grounds.
The more attributes the espresso coffee maker offers, the higher the cost attached to it. These coffee makers can cost anywhere from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars.
The first decision in choosing a coffee maker to be made is the demand to ascertain whether an espresso coffee maker or a non-espresso coffee maker is necessary. Coffee tastes, quantity and funding of coffee to be made are factors that impact the decision making process.

How To Choose Your Washer Settings Without Destroying Your Clothes

Most of us learned the hard way during our teenage years about clothes washer settings (red socks + white shirt mishaps, anyone?). But there are lessons beyond separating our colors from our whites. Find out what those temperature and cycle settings on your washing machines actually mean for an optimal laundry cycle.
Temperature
Modern washers generally give you the option to select a temperature for cleaning your clothes. Generally speaking the hotter the water the cleaner your clothes will be, but you don't always want to just crank up the heat. Hot water can cause your clothes to shrink and often colors and delicates require cold water but might not get out the really tough stuff. Selecting warm is often a compromise, but it's best to sort your laundry to maximize your washer's efficiency with the right settings. Always check your clothing tags for specific instructions but here's good general advice:
  • Durable white clothes should go on hot wash, cold rinse
  • Durable colors generally go on warm wash and cold or warm rinse
  • Permanent press generally goes on cold wash and cold rinse
  • Delicates should go on cold wash and cold rinse.
  • When in doubt, always check the tags!
Cycle
To confound matters beyond temperature, we're often presented with cycle options such as heavy duty, permanent press, hand wash, and delicate. RealSimple provides a breakdown of some of the more common settings you'll find and when to use them.
  • Quick Wash: A speedy cycle for a few lightly soiled items, like the blouse and pants you want to wear to dinner tonight. A faster spin means clothes will dry quicker, too.
  • Pre-Wash: Stained or extra-dirty garments? Use this to add a soak to the beginning of a cycle. Divide detergent among the pre-wash and detergent dispensers.
  • Permanent Press: Choose this to minimize wrinkling in dress shirts and pants, and preserve the finish on wrinkle-free items. Warm or hot wash water relaxes creases and a slow spin helps prevent new ones from forming.
  • Heavy Duty: Muddy play clothes and other sturdy, heavily soiled items do well in this cycle, which features a long, warm or hot wash and high-speed tumbling to scrub out filth.
  • Delicates: A short, cold wash with slow tumbling and spinning. Use it for sweaters, lingerie, and other items that require a light touch.
  • Hand Wash: Designed to mimic the way clothes are washed in the sink, with periods of gentle tumbling and soaking in cold water, this is for garments labeled "hand-wash."
  • Extra Rinse: Tacks an additional rinse onto the end of a cycle to ensure dirt, dust and detergent are thoroughly flushed out. A good option if a family member has allergies or sensitive skin.
  • Rinse and Spin: Quickly rinses and removes moisture from things like bathing suits and beach towels with no detergent.
